Here we share SA’s cheapest bakkies to own and repair based on the inaugural AA Spare Parts Pricing Guide published by the Automobile Association (AA).

The AA Spare Parts Pricing Guide includes parts pricing over eleven categories of vehicles in South Africa, including electric vehicles, and covers parts pricing for service parts, maintenance parts and body repair parts.
“After careful consideration of the parts needed across these three sub-categories, we identified a number of common parts which consumers may need to consider over the lifetime of their vehicles.
“Based on this, we collected pricing from dealerships in Gauteng to ensure fairness in the comparisons across each of the different categories of vehicles we selected. In terms of the vehicles themselves, we looked at popular and where possible, similarly priced models in each category,” said the AA.
The guide includes 63 vehicle types, including a range of double-cab bakkies, which are among the best-selling vehicles in South Africa on a monthly basis.
The Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux in particular, have been fighting it out of the top position for several years now, with the Japanese carmaker winning out as the best selling new passenger vehicle for several years, while the Ranger has come in third, behind the Volkswagen Polo Vivo.
Ford has massive plans to outshine and outsell its rival in 2022. In February, Ford Motor Company announced an investment of $1.05 billion (R15.8 billion) in its South African manufacturing operations.
New advanced technologies and systems will modernize and grow the Ford Silverton Assembly Plant, in Pretoria, to support expanded production of the all-new Ranger bakkie, starting in 2022, the group said. A $686 million (R10.3 billion) investment in technology, upgrades and new facilities at the Silverton plant will support high quality, efficient production of the all-new Ranger, it said.
The double-cab bakkie category is split according to the prices for parts needed during servicing, for repairs and as a result of crashes. Six vehicles were included in this year’s report:
- Ford Ranger 2.0SiT XLT FX4
- Mitsubishi Triton 2.4 Extreme A/T
- Toyota Hilux 2.8 Raider A/T
- Nissan Navara 2.5 LE A/T
- Isuzu D-Max 300 3.0TD LX A/T
- VW Amarok 2.0 Highline
The Ranger comes out tops at just over R11,4000 for maintenance parts, while the Mitsubishi Triton is almost three times as much as the Ford. VW Amarok, the most expensive vehicle on the list, is around R29,750.
The American brand is also cheapest for service parts at just over R5,000, with the Mitsubishi Triton again the most expensive at more than R13,000.
