Federal data that shows Tesla vehicles account for the lion’s share of crashes that involve driver-assist technologies.
Of the 392 incidents in the study, Tesla’s Autopilot was associated with 273. Five of those crashes proved fatal for an occupant.
“These technologies hold great promise to improve safety, but we need to understand how these vehicles are performing in real-world situations,” said Steven Cliff, the agency’s administrator, as reported by the Times. “This will help our investigators quickly identify potential defect trends that emerge.”
Regulators appear to be diving deeper into the release of new driver-assist technologies and the impact they might have on driver perception and safety.
