According to a report from The Detroit News, the 5G Automotive Association is testing new technology that reports the position of a vehicle to nearby pedestrians and other vehicles, as well as enables a vehicle to receive emergency notifications from a cellular network.

“Making roads safer for drivers and pedestrians is the ultimate goal of developing these next generation technologies,” Stellantis CTO Ned Curic said in a statement. “With 5GAA, we are working with industry leaders across the globe to help pave the way for autonomous technology to benefit our products and, ultimately, our customers.”

The pilot program uses fixed cameras and sensors through Blacksburg, a town about 40 miles west of Roanoke, to collect data to create an image of what a vehicle can see through edge computing technology and “make decisions to communicate safety risks for pedestrians or approaching vehicles.”

Per the report, the pilot program comes as the U.S. continues to see a noticeable increase in pedestrian deaths.
