The automaker’s recent decision to split its entire company into two divisions to double-down on its electrification efforts is a strategic gamble, one that places significant pressure on its EVs to sell and perform well immediately.
Moreover, the automaker has saddled even loftier expectations on its premier EV, the Mach-E, by branding it under the Mustang moniker.
To its credit, the Mach-E had a strong debut in 2021, moving 27,140 units, and the 2022 model looks to build on that momentum. Heralded by Car and Driver as a “transcendent” electric vehicle.
As weird as it may be, an electric crossover is doing the Mustang name justice.
Powered-Up Pony for the EV Age
Now available in five different trim levels, the 2022 Mach-E changes very little from last year’s model, opting for subtle performance enhancements.
The electric crossover comes standard with 70-kWh battery, with an enhanced 90-kWh battery available for a higher cost. The base Select model with rear-wheel drive has a slightly disappointing EPA-estimated 211-mile range, though a jump up to the next-level Premium model with the extended battery gets that number over 300 miles. Each model is also fast-charge capable, which could help relieve some range anxiety.
Depending on the trim, the Mach-E comes with either an electric motor mounted on the rear axle or two mounted on both axles. The base model with rear-wheel drive puts out 266 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. On the high-end GT Performance model, those jump to 480 horsepower and 634 pound-feet, letting the car get from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds.
“The Mustang Mach-E wholeheartedly rejects the notion that electric vehicles are only good at reducing gas consumption,” Ford executive Hau Thai-Tang said in a statement when the Mach-E debuted. “People want a car that’s thrilling to drive, that looks gorgeous and that can easily adapt to their lifestyle – and the Mustang Mach-E delivers all of this in unmatched style.”
A review from Car and Driver said the Mach-E was a better drive than most crossovers, and though it doesn’t quite have the same power as an ICE Mustang, it’s still an impressive vehicle, prompting the publication to award the vehicle its inaugural EV of the Year award.
“Drivers shouldn’t expect the Mach-E to be nearly as engaging as the traditional Mustang,” the review said. “Its quiet operation and super-smooth ride were most impressive.”
Interior, Infotainment and Safety Features
The Mach-E maximizes storage space by placing the battery for the vehicle under the floor of the car. That allows for a cabin that Car and Driver says “has little in common with the regular Mustang” and features customizable interior lighting, wireless charging, a panoramic sunroof and up to 60 cubic feet of cargo space.
Anchored by a 15.5-inch vertical touchscreen, the Mach-E offers what Ford touts as a “human-centered” infotainment layout that connects to Ford’s SYNC system, providing wireless phone connectivity and over-the-air updates to the vehicle’s software.
The Mach-E also sports several ADAS safety features such as forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist and lane-departure warning.
