CRA Motoring News – South Africa

Wondering what sort of official accessories Toyota South Africa Motors offers for its refreshed Hilux? Well, wonder no more.
The Japanese firm’s local arm offers a raft of extra (factory-approved) fittings for its popular bakkie. Here, we’ll take a look at what accessories are available for the Legend-badged double-cab variants, in addition to the optional RS package, which includes a roller shutter, a graphite-coloured sports bar, rubberised bedliner, an assisted tailgate (with a central-locking function) and dust-defence kit.
We’ll start up front, where you can specify a bonnet protector (in either clear or black), clear headlamp protectors, a Legend-branded nudge bar (in two styles, each offered in gloss black, matte black or stainless steel finishes) and a commercial steel bumper replacement.
Other items include a snorkel, dark-tinted side-window visors, window safety film (in either 100 or 150 micron form), door handle protection film, roof racks, chrome garnish (for areas such as the grille and fenders) and stainless-steel side steps.
Round back, Toyota offers a polyurethane load-bed lining (in either standard or heavy duty form), a rubber deck mat, soft tonneau covers, an aluminium roller shutter, deck cross bars, various styling bars, various rear step options, various tow-bar arrangements, a tailgate assist feature, chrome tailgate garnish and chrome tailpipe trim. Miscellaneous items include a spare-wheel lock, rubber floor mats, a sliding load-bin floor, locking alloy wheel nuts, a 12 V air compressor and even a dashcam.
As a reminder, the facelifted Hilux range gains an updated version of the 2,8-litre turbodiesel engine, which has had its peak outputs hiked to 150 kW and 500 N.m in automatic form (though manual models remain at 420 N.m). The Japanese firm furthermore says it has improved this powertrain’s fuel economy by “adopting a larger turbocharger and a new common-rail injection system”.
Interestingly, the 2,4 GD-6 4×4 model can now tow up to 3,5 tonnes, matching the 2,8 GD-6 4×4’s figure. Toyota also claims to have “improved ride comfort without compromising off-road performance and durability” thanks to new spring rates, shock absorbers and suspension bushes. It says the result is “more agile handling” and better ride comfort, “particularly when unladen”.
