According to Korea Joongang Daily, which cites “local reports and industry sources”, the company suspended development of diesel engines towards the end of 2020 as it shifted its focus to zero-emissions vehicles.

The publication claims the Hyundai group – which includes the Hyundai and Kia brands – “will not launch any new diesel engines from now”. It does, however, point out the automaker could still employ “partially revamped” versions of existing oil-burners in future models.

Korea Joongang Daily furthermore claims petrol engines will “continue to be developed”, seeing as they are used in hybrid and plug-in hybrid models.

At the start of 2021, the Hyundai Motor Group revealed its electrification plans.

“This year, Hyundai Motor Group will concentrate efforts to become a global electric vehicle powerhouse,” the company said in a statement, revealing it planned to launch vehicles such as the electric Hyundai Ioniq 5, an electric Kia crossover and more EVs in the Genesis stable.

“Hyundai Motor Group plans to expand its battery electric vehicle line-up from the current eight models to 23 by 2025 and sell one million units annually in global markets.”
